About

The Song Loft is the Main Sponsor of:

“The weekend starts here”

“Genuinely one of the best gigs I’ve ever been a part of! Fantastic Vibe. Fantastic club! Thanks muchly.” Keith Donnelly

The Song Loft exists to showcase national, local and international folk/roots/acoustic talent with bi-monthly events from September ’til June every year.

Over the years The Song Loft has migrated around the pleasant market town of Stony Stratford. Which, incidentally, has just won the “Buckinghamshire best kept town” award.

Our home is now The York House Centre, London Road, Stony Stratford MK11 1JQ.

On the 1st Friday of every month we hold a Performers’ Night where anyone can ‘Rise & Shine’. See our Performers’ Nights page for details.

On the 3rd Friday of every month we have a Concert where we book the best in national and international talent to perform in a concert-type atmosphere. We occasionally bend this ‘rule’ so see our Forthcoming Concerts page for details.

The Song Loft would not have existed were it not for Matt Armour who founded the club back in 1976. The first recorded night took place on 8th September 1977. The Song Loft started life as “Folk at the Crown”, at the Crown, Market Square, Stony Stratford.

The first night was a singers night, and the first guests a fortnight later were a group from Leicestershire called “Brandywine Bridge”.

The club continued fortnightly at the Crown for the next 2 years , before moving to The Cock Hotel in the High Street.

To coincide with the move the name was changed to “The Stony Stratford Folk Club” and later in October 1980 is was decided that a further name change would be beneficial, and the “The Song Loft ” was born.

The Loft has continued in this guise on a bi-monthly basis to the present day. Sadly in 2009 Matt passed away. The Song Loft is now run by two dedicated people, namely:-

Jane Armour and Andrew Metcalfe – who wish to extend their thanks to Bill Reed and Barbara Bourne for running the club until April 2021 – to Julia Metcalfe and Chrissy Leonhardt for their assistance twice a month and to all our regulars past present and future.
